Alberta wind surfing

Alberta, Canada windsurfing and kitesurfing is enjoyed on some of the lakes and man-made reservoirs located throughout the province. All in all, there are about 600 or so lakes in Alberta, Canada. Not all Alberta lakes are ideal surfing destinations but some are.

There are lakes created by massive dams and there are lakes surrounded by flat land covered with grassland prairies and fields of coulees.

The windsurfing and kitesurfing lakes are all located so they are exposed to very high winds. Some of the lakes are shared lakes with other wind water sport activities like sailing therefore there may be a sailing and yacht club nearby plus other services.

The lakes are sometimes rural with little services or they are developed with many services. On the popular wind sport lakes there is a good chance there is a windsurfing and kitesurfing shop located nearby providing equipment rentals and lessons.

Some of the other services and amenities available on some of the Alberta lakes may include a marina, docks, swimming beach, power, moorage, picnic sites, restaurants, washrooms, showers, boat houses, pit toilets and paved boat launches.

Some of the windsurfing and kitesurfing destinations in the North Alberta region of the province include the Lesser Slave Lake and the Lac La Biche regions.

In the Rocky Mountain region of Alberta the windsurfing and kitesurfing destinations include Lake Minnewanka and Spray Lakes near the Village of Banff and the Talbot Lake, Patricia Lake and Pyramid Lake near the Village of Jasper, Alberta.

In Central Alberta region visit the Miquelon Lake Provincial Park near Camrose; the Pigeon Lake Provincial Park near Edmonton; the Sylvan Lake Provincial Park near Red Deer and the Crimson Lake Provincial Park near Rocky Mountain House.

Windsurfing and kitesurfing destinations in South Alberta include the Glenmore Reservoir, Gull Lake and Chestermere Lake near Calgary; the Ghost Reservoir Lake near Cochrane; the Oldman Dam Recreation Area near Fort Macleod; the Little Bow Provincial Park near Vulcan; Lake Newell near Brooks and the Waterton Lakes National Park in the southwest corner of the province.
