Alberta snowmobiling
Alberta, Canada snowmobiling is a popular outdoor winter activity providing an opportunity to explore all types of snow covered landscapes throughout the province of Alberta.
The season for snowmobiling, typically, runs from December to late April. After the season opens, the snow is on the ground, snowmobiling is an ideal adventure for sightseeing and exploring the winter landscapes of Alberta.
There are over 5000 kilometres of trails which are groomed in Alberta every year. The trails cover all sorts of terrain including mountain ranges, frozen rivers, boreal forest, foothills, grassland prairie and the hoodoos and coulees of the Canadian Badlands.
In addition to the groomed trails for snowmobiling there are also many kilometres of wilderness trails leading into the backcountry of Alberta which become snowmobile routes after the snow has fallen. These trails are less maintained, not groomed and exposed to more elements of danger.
The snowmobile trails and recreational areas in Alberta are extensive enough that they connect to other nearby provinces. It is on these long haul routes that local snowmobile clubs have erected safety shelters.
There are many designated riding areas located in the province. Many are maintained by local snowmobile clubs. The clubs groom the trails, check for avalanches and clear the staging areas.
There are snowmobile tour companies operating in Alberta, Canada. Snowmobile tours vary from 1/2 day rides to multi day rides. Most touring companies will include the accommodations, transportation to staging areas and meals on overnight snowmobiling adventures.
Much of the Rocky Mountain region is protected national park with little room for snowmobiling. The snowmobiling in the region is mostly in Kananaskis Country, and near Grande Cache and Bragg Creek.
Some of the North Alberta snowmobiling regions one may want to consider include the 375+ kilometres of trails exploring the boreal forests, frozen rivers and lakes near the community of High Level.
The Central Alberta snowmobile trails, parks and recreational areas include the Elk Island National Park, Redwater Natural Area and the Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Recreation Area near Edmonton; the 265+ groomed trails near Westlock; the trails in the "Snowmobile Capital of Alberta." Whitecourt and the mountain trails of Rocky Mountain House and Hinton.
And some of the snowmobile trails in the southern region of Alberta include the gravel roads, groomed trails and wilderness trails located throughout the Crowsnest Pass.
