Alberta downhill skiing
Alberta, Canada downhill skiing is a very popular activity in the province during the winter season. The ski hills in Alberta attract many people from around the world to the province who enjoy downhill skiing.
There are over 60+ regional ski hills and 6 major ski resorts in Alberta, Canada. The ski destinations range from small hills with one lift servicing a few trails to massive ski resorts with gondolas, doubles and quad chair lifts servicing a wide selection of ski runs on many slopes of the mountain.
There are double black diamond (difficult) ski runs exploring snow bowls and cliffs while dodging trees and navigating moguls. And then, close to the lodge, there are green ski runs (easy going bunny hills) for the beginner and small children.
The length of the ski season is different for every mountain. A lot depends on how quick the snow arrives on the mountains and how long does it stick around. In general the ski season usually begins in late November or December and runs until late April.
The Alberta, Canada downhill ski destinations provide services which enable skiers to enjoy the alpine environment. Many of the ski hills provide the basics of downhill skiing services like ski lessons, ski rentals and a warming lodge.
The larger downhill ski resorts are like communities with many services. The ski resorts enjoy services like accommodations, spas, tours, lodges, restaurants, liquor stores, grocery stores, pubs, retail stores, entertainment, coffee houses, day care, access to other activities and more.
The major ski resorts are located in the Rocky Mountain region of Alberta in the Banff National Park, Jasper National Park and near Canmore in Kananaskis Country.
Some of the more popular ski resorts in the province include Lake Louise and Sunshine Village near Banff and Lake Louise in the Banff National Park; the Marmot Basin ski resort near Jasper in the Jasper National Park; the Mount Norquay ski resort near Canmore and the Nakiska and Castle Mountain resorts near Calgary.
Some of the other smaller ski hills include Tawatinaw Valley in Westlock; Sunridge, Rabbit Hill, and Snow Valley in Edmonton; Silver Summit near Edson; Pass Powderkeg in Crowsnest Pass; Kinosoo Ridge near Cold Lake and Canyon ski hill near Red Deer.
