Alberta backpacking, wilderness camping, CanadaThe most popular backpacking adventures in Alberta, Canada are located in the Rocky Mountains which are situated along the Alberta and British Columbia border.

The Rockies in Alberta are one of Canada's most visited wilderness adventure destinations. The Rocky Mountain Range includes the Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Kananaskis Country, Crowsnest Pass and the Waterton Lakes National Park. Each region is different. Each provides backpacking opportunities.

Other Alberta backpacking destinations are located in some of the larger parks and wilderness areas scattered throughout the rest of the province. The Willmore Wilderness Park near Grande Cache and the Wood Buffalo National Park near High Level are two such parks.

The backpacking trails in Alberta vary from easy to extremely difficult. Some require only a half day hike to reach a backcountry destination while others may require weeks of day hikes and nights of wilderness camping.

Trails vary in elevation, terrain and weather conditions. Some are easy going, relatively flat backpacking routes leading into the forest or into a valley of coulees and hoodoos. Many multi day adventures in Alberta include elevation gains, extreme weather conditions and wilderness campgrounds.

Wilderness campgrounds are self maintained. You pack out what you pack in. No exceptions. The campgrounds vary greatly in quality, amenities and services. Wilderness campgrounds, may or may not, include tent pads, food poles, food caches, pit toilets, picnic tables, fire pits and/or firewood.

When backpacking in Alberta prepare well. Overnight backpacking is not for beginners in many cases. For the inexperienced backpacker tours and guides are recommended. Also... be aware that the backcountry is home to wildlife. Do not interact with wildlife.
