There are campgrounds all over the province in all sorts of environments. Camping in Alberta is a popular way to travel in the summer months when sightseeing around the province. It is a low budget, outdoor experience made for adventures and wildlife sightings.

There are various types of campgrounds in Alberta. There are out-of-the-way campgrounds embedded into the wilderness and there are city campgrounds located close to services and amenities.

There are privately run campgrounds and there are government, forestry and city run campgrounds. The owners of a private campground live on site while the national and provincial campgrounds are maintained by park rangers.

Different campgrounds provide different experiences. A privately run campground, almost always, includes power, washrooms and showers. Many are gated and provide security.

The high end resort campground may also be a gated community. Many include extras like an outdoor pool, private beach, sauna, restaurant, games room, playground and general store.

A national and provincial park campground may include a wildlife museum, interpretive centre, park office, hiking trails, tours, warming huts, day use areas, public beach, playgrounds, washrooms, showers and educational programs.

The most rustic of all camping is the wilderness campground. It is a remote campsite located at the end of a backcountry gravel road or located on a backpacking, mountain biking or horseback riding trail.

Wilderness campgrounds are basic campsites operated by parks, forestry, mining, hydro, etc. They are self maintained campgrounds. Respect others and nature and clean up after yourself. The remote campgrounds may include tenting pads, food caches, food poles, pit toilets, picnic tables, fire pits, hunting racks and firewood.

Alberta campground services depends on your needs and wants. Campground services, may or may not, include power, sani dump, pull through sites, firewood, showers, washrooms, tap water, pit toilets, playgrounds, boat launch, swimming area, laundromat, satellite tv hookup, tenting pads and internet.
